WINSTON-SALEM, NC (June 4, 2023) — Leading 3-2 in the Battle of I-40, the Winston-Salem Dash look to clinch the series win in Sunday’s finale against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. After dropping two consecutive six-game sets, this series win would mark the first in over three weeks for the Dash.
Saturday night’s game five was called early due to inclement weather, but Winston-Salem was able to pull out a 2-0 win through 5 ½ innings. Wilfred Veras continued his hot hitting, going 1-2 on the night with an RBI double, his 21st of the season.
Game Six Mound Matchups
Lefty Brooks Gosswein is set to toe the slab for game six, marking his second start of the series. In game one, the 24-year-old had a solid outing, working four innings of two-hit, 2 run ball with four strikeouts.
Through eight starts on the year, Gosswein has pitched to a 3.22 ERA with 36 strikeouts. He’s tossed at least four innings in six of his eight starts, and he’s given up more than 2 runs just once in that span.
While he’s struck out batters at an impressive clip, he’s struggled to keep his walks down, sitting at 5.70 walks per nine innings and a 14.8 BB%. Gosswein is on pace for career bests in plenty of metrics so far this season, and he hopes to add another consistent start to his resume in Sunday’s series finale.
For Greensboro, righty Po-Yu Chen will be taking the mound for his first start of the series. He made an appearance in game one, spinning five innings of 2 run ball in long relief. So far this season, Chen has compiled a 5.01 ERA with 41 strikeouts in nine games.
The 21-year-old has displayed some consistent length, tossing at least five innings in six of his nine games. He’s been rocky though, surrendering 4 or more runs three times in that frame. He’s been able to create a fair number of swings and misses, striking out at least five batters six times this season.
However, his road splits appear favorable for the Dash. In 18 innings outside of Greensboro, Chen is 0-2 with a 6.50 ERA, issuing 10 walks and surrendering 22 hits.
